Update July 2026: Dangerous footpath at Walmer Road used by cyclists and motorbikes

We have continued to petition RBKC to make this footpath safe. The interim measures put in place by RBKC in 2024 (slightly widening the curved footpath, and putting up some ‘no cycling’ signs and bollards) have not helped.
The footpath is still used inappropriately many times all day and night by cyclists, motorcyclists, electric scooters and others, and there continue to be collisions and near collisions which are harmful and distressing.
Worse, a survey of the 'no cycling' signs showed that they are misinterpreted by nearly 100% of people (including a visiting RBKC representative) as meaning that cyclists are allowed! Someone has painted a red stripe across the sign presumably in an effort to make it more obvious that cyclists are banned from the footpath (see photo above in lower right hand corner).
In any case, we are asking RBKC to remedy this confusion - for example by adding a sign stating, in words, 'no cyclists'.
Next steps
Further to our petitioning RBKC surveyed the existing steps by the side of the pocket park planted area, and the paved area leading to the steps (the paved area is to the left of the planted area - see photo above). The proposal is to replace the paved area and the steps with a cycle path, thus keeping cyclists and others separate from pedestrians on the curved footpath and making it much safer. RBKC intends to do a consultation about the proposals later in 2026.
The most recent update from RBKC (June 2026) stated that: ' ... we have no implementation budget at this time and are unlikely to until 2027-28 at the earliest'. This isn extremely disappointing - residents have been petitioning RBKC for over a decade to solve this problem.
