Update Council Tax Bands to Reflect Current Housing Market
Update Council Tax Bands to Reflect Current Housing Market
The Issue
In 2024, across social media I know of many households and families struggling to pay their bills and feed their households. Some people have finally managed to get on the housing ladder and afford small new build houses in their area but are paying tax band E when older houses with more space and gardens are C or D. This system doesn't make sense, it's not fair, and it is causing unnecessary hardship for many.
The council tax bands we currently use were established in 1991, over 30 years ago. The housing market has drastically changed since then, yet our tax system has not kept pace with these changes. It is time for an update that reflects the current state of housing in our communities.
According to a report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), council tax bills can vary significantly between similar properties in different parts of England/Scotland and Wales due to outdated property valuations (source: IFS). This discrepancy results from using a system based on property values from three decades ago.
We urge local authorities and government bodies responsible for setting council taxes to review and update the current banding system. Doing so will ensure fairness, reflect contemporary property values, ease financial burdens on families struggling with high bills, and create a more equitable society.
Please sign this petition if you believe that everyone should pay their fair share based on current realities rather than outdated systems.
