Let financially-challenged senior UP students graduate and repeal the 'no late payment' policy!

We appeal to the sense of compassion and humanity of the UP administration to let four senior UP Political Science students to settle their financial obligations with the university, although late, and finish their degree.

These students have already raised enough money to pay their tuition this semester and have appealed their case to UP Manila Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Josephine de Luna but most where disapproved. One was even asked to submit health and employment records of his father. VC De Luna opined that approve these students' request would set a precedent for future instances of late payment and violate the University's "no late payment" policy.

Two of these students' father are seafarers but were laid off from work. One has a heart condition, which prevents him from having gainful employment. The other breadwinner was recently hospitalized. One of these four students works to support his studies.

These students and their families are in dire financial situation but they persevered throughout this academic year to attend their classes and meet all course requirements expected of a UP student. One of them even presented his paper during the annual Political Science Convocation as a candidate for Best Paper award.

The university has nothing to gain in preventing poor, working students like them from graduating due to inability to pay tuition on time. For these students, their college diploma could be the only hope left for their families to overcome destitution.

We believe that no graduating student should be barred from attending the commencement exercises solely for the reason of financial incapacity or failure to pay tuition on time. The university should even be more supportive of indigent, working students who, despite of their poverty, struggle to live up to the university's mantra of honor and excellence.
