The act of living freely and doing the most basic everyday actions has now become a luxury out of reach for women in Afghanistan. Since the Taliban seized power for the second time in 2021, a brutal web of restrictions has stripped women of their fundamental human rights. Afghan women are punished and even killed, simply for trying to live. They have been stripped of access to education, work, freedom of movement, and any say in public decision-making.

It is often said that a cat in Kabul has more freedom than an Afghan woman. Girls are barred from pursuing education past the 6th grade. A strict dress code conceals women's faces and identities. They are forbidden from traveling or visiting public places, such as parks, without a male guardian (mahram). Under recent decrees, women are not even allowed to speak or be heard in public. They are forced to live like ghost-like figures in their own country, unable to move freely or even breathe without fear.

Access to healthcare has also become a nightmare. Women cannot seek medical treatment without a male relative present. To make matters worse, in many provinces, female patients are forbidden from seeing male doctors, yet the Taliban has blocked women from studying medicine or healthcare, causing a devastating shortage of female professionals.

On top of this, women are completely excluded from political life. Legal protections against domestic and sexual violence have been dismantled. Young girls are forced into child marriages with grown men, sometimes even forced to marry their abusers.

This is not a distant policy issue; it is a nightmare that millions of women are living through right now. No one deserves to be treated like this. Every single one of us deserves equal rights and opportunities, and we must take action to demand equality. Speak for those who are being silenced.
