Recollections of my child, scattered like stars across the Australian sky that shelters me, are forever etched on the canvas of my heart. Each time my heart longs for his laughter, his touch, it pulls me to that fateful day in the UK which has left an open wound, a mother's heart ripped apart not just by loss, but by sheer horror.

The mind creates the worst scenarios when you lose your child, and I had silently braced myself as I stepped into the chapel of rest, apprehensive of seeing my son for the last time. Yet, what I witnessed was an ordeal I wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemy. My son, my dear child, was unceremoniously stripped of his dignity in death. His face was grotesquely morphed into an image of neglect, his body desecrated with broken ankles. His presentation was not befitting the farewell he deserved, and this trauma was unasked, unwarranted.

Disturbingly, what I discovered later compounded my pain - in the UK, funeral directing is an ungoverned profession; no laws, no qualifications necessary to shape destinies of those departed and their bereaved families. My son fell victim to this grievous oversight which allowed such horrific embalming.

What I stumbled upon was merely the tip of an iceberg, under a pretence of care and professional conduct. My quest for justice was met with unsettling silence. The resounding echoes of this truth left me aghast and hurt even more.

As a mother who has endured an unimaginable torment, I implore you, dear lawmakers, compassionate citizens of the UK, families across the globe: hear my plea. Let this outcry reaching you from the depths of a grieving heart in far-off Australia, resonate in the corridors of power and halls of justice in the UK.

The laws must change. A thorough regulatory framework for funeral directors - specifying qualifications, enforcing rigorous checks, and guarding against such malpractice - is not just a necessity, it’s an urgent call to humanity.

Grief and loss are burdens heavy enough that no bereaved soul should also bear the torment of seeing their loved one robbed of dignity in death. Strong regulations would ensure that funeral directors honour every life departed and offer families the respect, support, and solace they deserve in their difficult time.

This appeal for justice transcends beyond personal revenge. It is a fight for future victims and their families, that they may be spared the horrifying fate I bore witness to. Let us join hands in paving the path for a change that respects our deceased and brings peace to the shattered hearts left behind. Stand with me and together, we can transform this tragedy into a promising beacon of reform and hope.
