Hi Friends and Supporters of UNM Skiing –
The UNM Ski Team needs your help and support again!
As you may recall, in the Spring of 2017, the University of New Mexico Administration and Board of Regents announced plans to cut the UNM Ski Team, effective immediately. As you may also recall, the Ski Team launched a huge media campaign to save the team (including this Change.org petition). Our campaign focused on our athletic and academic achievements. We were ultimately successful in getting the Ski Team reinstated for two years.
Well guess what – UNM’s Administration and Regents have now again announced that the team will be cut, after the end of the 2018-2019 season. In addition to cutting Men’s and Women’s Skiing, they are also planning to cut Men’s Soccer, Women’s Beach Volleyball and Women’s Diving.
When the Ski Team was reinstated, we agreed with the Administration that we would work together to generate significant private funding to cover a large portion of the Ski Team’s operating costs … which we did. We met our promise to develop significant outside funding sources, raising roughly $200,000 towards our annual budget.
The UNM Board of Regents will meet this Friday, August 17th at 1:00pm in the Student Union Bldg Ballroom at UNM for a formal vote on whether or not to cut these sports. If you are in Albuquerque and can attend the meeting, we’d love to have your support. If you can’t make it in person, it would be great if you could send a message of support for the Ski Team (and other sports) to University President Dr. Garnett Stokes (phone 505-277-2626 or email firstname.lastname@example.org), as well as the UNM Board of Regents (email@example.com). Here is the notice for the Regents meeting:
Thanks for your support! We will win this thing again!
