The Issue

As a parent of multiple children involved in competitive and rec baseball, I have first-hand experience of the struggle to find outdoor practice space when the weather turns nice. South Jordan City has limited public accessibility to its baseball and softball fields, despite tax-paying citizens' rights to use these amenities unless they are booked for scheduled games, tournaments, or leagues. It's a common sight at South Jordan City Park to witness teams competing to get on Field 5 nearly every day. It's also common to see dozens of teams show up at the park gates only to realize they are locked. For baseball/softball teams to get outside and practice, they must leave city boundaries and go to surrounding cities who have year round access. The community spirit is palpable - our children dedicating their time to a productive activity rather than aimlessly wandering the streets causing mischief. Yet, all the surrounding cities offer unlocked fields 365 days a year, demonstrating it's not an impossible state of affairs. Representing countless families and baseball/softball enthusiasts from South Jordan, I urge the relevant public officials to reevaluate this frustrating lockout policy. Let our children practice on the fields they rightfully should have access to. These fields deserve to be used by residents just like we use pickle-ball, tennis and soccer fields year round. Sign this petition to demand a change and encourage the freedom for youth sports engagement within our community.
