All:

I received this email from Sen. Hank Hoversland if ASUW last night and he gave me permission to share it with you all. Please let me know your thoughts! Are you happy with this development? Or is there more you’d like to see from ASUW?

Hi Hunter,

I just wanted to reach out to you as a student in the College of Arts & Sciences and the creator of a really powerful petition on change.org. I really appreciate your activism and want you to know you have for sure caught the eye of ASUW. I regret waiting this long to reach out to you but wanted to let you know we did indeed talk about your petition and what ASUW can do to support it and different ways at a committee meeting earlier this evening.

I am not sure if anybody else within our organization has reached out to you but feel I should explain a little bit. In our conversations tonight we discussed the executive branch’s work on a hopefully permanent student fee transparency project. I hope you see that on social media in the near future. President Talamantes and Vice President Titus have also already reached out to Academic Affairs and other parts of campus and it was explained to them that the online fees are put in place instead of program fees, so for the most part it should balance out; this is not to say for students within the College of Education or School of Energy Resources that holds true always. As for the athletic fees and Recreation fees, we are waiting on further guidance on what those units on campus will look like this coming semester and will be fluid with that and relevant guidance from the Wyoming Department of Health. I want to be forthright with you and let you know we did discuss certain fees like the Campus Recreation fee and how that supports some wages for students and staff and how we feel that to be important for them in these tough times. Additionally, some of those departments on campus are giving virtual offerings to still support students and their wellbeing in these uncertain times. On top of that, it was explained to us that students who are fully online are not required to pay the mandatory student fees, but are still able to opt-in to certain fees (for example, all of my classes are online, so I will opt-in to paying the ASUW fee to keep my spot on Senate). We are awaiting guidance from financial offices on campus on how the coding works on that like if they were originally scheduled to be face-to-face if that affects the opting process.

I have attached a document we received today from Coe Library to show how those student fees were spent in FY20 as well!

I hope this gives you some clarity but would welcome any further feedback you feel is necessary and truly appreciate the passion you have for creating change on the UW campus. Please feel free to also reach out if you have any questions on what I said or need further clarification because I do know I rumble on sometimes and words do not always work for me. Thank YOU again and have a great evening.

Thanks,

Hank Hoversland
