Edward Leung started this petition to University of Waterloo

On Apr 1, uWaterloo Professor Dipanjan Basu wrote on Facebook that China and China bats are the source of the Wuhan Virus (coronavirus / COVID).

Since that post, the professor has faced baseless claims of "spreading hatred" and being "racist" from international Chinese students who want to save China's face and deny the fact that the virus originated from China.

We commend Prof Basu's bravery and willingness to speak truth to power. Prof Basu is doing a world a favor by letting the world know that this virus originated from China and that Chinese bat markets are a prime location for outbreaks.

It is not easy for UWaterloo professors to speak out on Chinese issues, given the high Mainland Chinese visa student population. As a UWaterloo student, I can confirm that the overwhelming majority of Chinese students here have NOT felt anxious from his comments.

We find it deeply troubling that international Chinese students are spreading Chinese Communist Party propaganda: that anyone who links the coronavirus with China is "racist". The truth is simple: if China did NOT censor news of this virus (ex: arresting Li Wenlang) and reported its case numbers truthfully, there would be no pandemic today. Hundreds of thousands of Italians, Koreans, and Americans wouldn't have to die.

We cannot let Chinese students erase history. If we do, we will never learn from this experience and not be able to prevent a future pandemic like this one.
