The University of Washington claims to be one of the most environmentally responsible institutions in the nation, yet it invests millions of dollars directly in the fossil fuel industry every year.

These investments undermine the UW’s Climate Action Plan and damage the credibility of the institution as a whole. Beyond the clear moral dilemma these investments present, they also expose the endowment to the risk presented by the carbon bubble.

We, as alumni, supporters of the UW, and members of the broader community, call on the UW to commit to divesting its endowment of fossil fuels with a particular focus on coal energy investments. If the UW does not commit to divestment we pledge to withhold our donations until it is done, lest our donations be invested in fossil fuels, which ethically and economically weaken the institution we hold so dear.
