OPEN LETTER

To Stuart Croft and Senior Management at the University of Warwick,

This open letter, signed by students, staff and the wider community, is written in an effort to bring to light structural issues in the university’s wellbeing support system.

Given the recent public scrutiny surrounding the university’s handling of sensitive wellbeing concerns, we as students, stand together to ensure that our community no longer suffers in silence.

We propose a three-pronged plan to overhaul the way our university currently deals with mental health and wellbeing support. Recent attempts to restructure the wellbeing department have been welcomed and have proved promising. In spite of this, we as students understand the great strain the department faces due to lack of staff and resources. Hence, our three-point plan is as follows:

1.    Strengthen the staff base to ensure that the needs of our growing community are met.

2.    Improve the provision of resources so that students do not have to compete for appointments.

3.    Introduce a system whereby students must meet with a wellbeing adviser on a termly basis in order to fulfil a monitoring point.

We believe that these efforts will ensure that less people are suffering in silence, and that enough support is readily available for individuals who require it.

Warwick University is failing its student population. Since 2016/17 over 33 ambulances have been called to campus responding to reports of suicide and attempted suicide.

For how much longer can we keep ignoring the blatant problem of mental health?

Signed,
A concerned community.
