Did you know that only 9% of our plastic waste ends up getting recycled? Most ends up in landfills where it will not break down, while the rest is either incinerated (contributing to climate change and air pollution) or littered into the environment.

Plastic is now officially listed as a toxic substance under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), yet single-use plastics continue to be used around the country, including on our campus at the University of Victoria (UVic).

The Surfrider Foundation UVic Club (Surfrider UVic) has partnered with the Post Landfill Action Network (PLAN) to urge UVic and President Kevin Hall to lead by example and sign onto the Break Free From Plastic Campus Pledge, which asks colleges and universities to eliminate single-use plastic from campus in the following steps:

  • Develop a Plastic-Free or Zero-Waste Task Force including students, staff, faculty from appropriate departments, and administration that develops a roadmap to a plastic free campus.
  • Immediate elimination of all non-essential, non-compostable, single-use disposable plastics with readily available alternatives.
  • Establish a procurement and/or purchasing policy which provides the framework for the long-term elimination of  all non-essential, non-compostable, single-use disposable plastics - both provided by the institution and those provided by contracted food vendors.
  • Implementation of campus-wide systems that facilitates the proper collection and management of the non-disposable products from step 3

We understand the importance of considering accessibility issues when implementing bans on single-use plastics such as straws, and we are committed to ensuring that no barriers are put in place for people who need these items.

By signing this petition I am urging the University of Victoria and President Kevin Hall to sign this pledge and commit to eliminating single use-plastics and reducing waste.
