Currently, the retention, promotion and tenure procedures at the University of Utah include an indispensable vote by a Student Advisory Committee (SAC). It is being proposed to Academic Senate that this vote be removed and changed to optional input decided by each department. Many departments at our university have strong, longstanding SACs that have never had a problem in the RPT process. If this vote is taken away, it will never be given back. As students, we deserve a vote and a seat at the table- after all, these professors can have impacts that last a lifetime on the students they mentor and teach. The ability to vote in an RPT process is rare, and we have an opportunity to show our community and our university that we care enough to fight for it.
