Keep Blue Light Phones at University of Tulsa

The Issue

As most people have seen already, the University of Tulsa is planning to remove the blue light phones and have placed a QR code for an app in their place. This is endangering the welfare of our students and staff. Phones are not always readily available, they could die, be off for class, or some people might not even have a phone capable of downloading the app. Not everyone has a smartphone, or a phone at all. In emergencies we don’t always have a chance to dig out our phones, unlock it, and use an app, that is time consuming and a waste of valuable time in a emergency. If we had our phones we could just call Campus Security (918) 631-5555 or 911. The point of these blue lights were to provide a safe beakon on campus where you could run up and push the emergency button that calls 911 and alerts TU Campus Security. The lights also would flash and alarm meaning anyone on campus would see and hear the alert…. Potentially stopping certain emergency situations. Our campus community will not feel safe without them. The University’s website also states “ The Blue Light Telephone System increases safety and prevents crime by enabling people to reach Campus Security quickly from multiple locations around campus.” Please sign the petition to keep the blue light phones at the University of Tulsa.
