Partial Refund for UTSA Students in Response to COVID-19

Partial Refund for UTSA Students in Response to COVID-19
The Issue
Beginning March 23, The University of Texas at San Antonio will completely shift to online classes. This will be a dramatic change of pace, midway through the semester. While this is a necessary step to aid in social isolation, it is a decrease in the quality of education that students have paid for. Due to campus closure, students are losing out on spaces critical for learning, including studio spaces, photography labs, and major specific computer labs with specialized software. Students will also be losing out on valuable real time feedback from professors and peers, which is critical for personal growth, as well as group learning.
In addition to campus closure, many are being required to leave dorms (with some exceptions) and return home, further distancing students from the remaining few available resources such as: Counseling and Mental Health Services, Student Health Services, the Library, and the Roadrunner Pantry. Furthermore, this perpetuates economic inequality for students, as not all have access to computers, or wifi- thus causing much stress amongst those who do not currently have access to these resources.
In response to these stressful events, the student body of UTSA, is requesting a partial refund of tuition. The refund will ease the financial burden of students during this stressful time, as many are likely to be laid off due to non-essential business closure amid the COVID-19 spread; who are all expected to pay the same amount of tuition for lowered educational conditions. Students are requesting that their financial well being (in regards to the quality of their education) be prioritized, as well as their health in response to the current pandemic.
