Require an African American History class at the University of Tennessee at Martin

Require an African American History class at the University of Tennessee at Martin
The Issue
We, a coalition of UT Martin students, alumni, employees, and community members with vested interest in the future of University of Tennessee at Martin, hold a deep concern for the present and historical racial divide on campus and society. We strongly believe that the University of Tennessee at Martin will benefit from African American history as a required course for the completion of its undergraduate programs. We are committed to pioneering social change and creating a more open and inclusive environment for the UT Martin community. We are also committed to graduating students who will actively work to tear down the white supremacy that has so deeply stained our nation’s history and who will be champions of a more just and loving society.
At this time in our history it has never been more vital that we address this racial divide through the ultimate purpose of a university - education. The oppression of Black Americans is the template for the oppression of all other groups in our country. By learning about the history of African Americans in our country, students can better understand the systemic racism that pervades our society today and the current structures of power and privilege. With this knowledge they will be better equipped to create a more just future for all.
We therefore demand a required class in African American History and Thought.
