Some hours after originally posting their response to the Independent story yesterday, the University was forced to update its statement due to the pressure the academic community has put on them.
In the updated version, the University claims to have been in regular contact with the victim and continues to support them. As well as this, they added that they 'assessed any risk to its students' and kept the situation 'under review' whilst criminal proceedings were ongoing, and that they take student safety 'extremely seriously'.
However, their actions again speak louder than words. If Sussex really did take student safety seriously, it should be common sense that the tutor should have been suspended whilst criminal proceedings were ongoing and fired once he was found guilty.
This man is a vile individual who has shown no remorse for his crime and the fact that it has taken several weeks for the University to act shows the lack of conviction to act in the interest of protecting the safety of students.
Sussex's lack of action on this has been unacceptable and the almost 2,000 signatures of this petition continue to demand that this despicable tutor be removed immediately.
