Hold University Accountable for Racism

Hold University Accountable for Racism
The Issue
The University of Surrey was made aware that their staff member was engaging and producing white supremacist content since 2017, but despite knowin was only fired in July 2020 when Black Lives Matter began trending. Multiple students had complained about online content, which the university quietly investigated but still allowed him to teach during this time. By doing so the university has placed multiple students of colour at risk due to allowing them in such close proximity to a man that encourages violence against black and brown students. The University of Surrey has been compliant with a white supremacist and in doing so have become complicit.
It is clear that University of Surrey has failed not only at their duty to safeguard all students but also to provide a safe space for poc. This lack of care about BAME students is also reflected in the curriculum in which the English department is made up of mostly white staff who promote predominantly white texts. It is because of this that the students are demanding change in all aspects of how Surrey University is run.
Our goals are:
1. A public apology from the university and from Bran Nicols (head of Literature and Language department) stating full accountability. 2. Better recruitment procedures and safeguarding processes to avoid this happening again.
3. More accessible place to go about these issues instead of it being handled ‘internally’ and therefore covered up.
4. Step by step of how they are going to amend this issue.
5. off their list of staff and remove his books from all reading lists. 6. actions must be on his record to affect his future employment.
7. More poc representation within the faculty.
8. University contacts other unis demanding that work be taken off their curriculum too. 9. Public denouncement of and his actions.
