University of Portsmouth: Give Students a Partial Refund for Cancelling Online Lectures
University of Portsmouth: Give Students a Partial Refund for Cancelling Online Lectures
The Issue
Like many other universities in the UK, teaching at the University of Portsmouth has been delivered online via video conferences as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Following an extremely vague email which needed clarification, the university has chosen to cancel these live lectures until January with the rationale of 'allowing students and staff to travel home for Christmas'. Many students and staff have voiced their opinions on this last minute decision, explaining how they benefit from live lectures as they provide the opportunity to share ideas and engage with one another. Students are already deprived of face-to-face teaching and are now expected to obtain their education by watching videos on Moodle, an open-source learning platform. If the university is going to progress with this decision, we ask for a partial refund on tuition fees for this semester in return. We are essentially receiving the experience of an open university course whilst paying full tuition fees. We feel cheated. Live lectures and seminars are already recorded, so those who may not be able to attend are still given the opportunity to catch up, concluding that this decision is illogical and puts students in a disadvantaged position.
