Support Penn ALLIED Guards in Our Fight to Secure Their Legally Entitled Wage!
The Issue
In February, Philadelphia mayor Jim Kenney signed a new law into place to increase the wages of security guards at four-year higher education institutions to at least $15/hr. The law applies to institutions that are receiving government subsidies such as tax-payer funded water; to date, the University of Pennsylvania is not in compliance with the law, which went into effect in July. While security guards on Penn’s campus are not directly employed by the University (and instead by ALLIED), the University and ALLIED share a contract, and Penn pays ALLIED.
Thus, the law applies to private sub-contractors, such as ALLIED Universal security services. As such, the University’s noncompliance has resulted in a small fine. Please join us by signing this petition, thus delivering a strong message to the University of Pennsylvania to comply with Section 17-107 of the Philadelphia Code by ensuring that their ALLIED security services-whose salaries average at only $11.85/hr-are paid a wage of at least $15/hr.
