Postpone the University of Oregon Spring 2020 Commencement

Due to the global challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Oregon has suspended all in-person events for the rest of spring term. On behalf of the Class of 2020, we request that the Spring Commencement and departmental ceremonies be reconsidered, or even postponed, rather than canceled. This petition serves to bring attention to the desires of the student body.
The CDC recommends against large gatherings for the next 8 weeks, which would NOT directly impact the Spring 2020 Commencement (June 15th). We understand the difficult situation faced by universities across the country and believe safety is the top priority. We believe that by reconsidering holding Spring Commencement, or even postponing if need be, UO can continue to prioritize safety while still preserving this milestone event for many members of our community.
College graduation is a once in a lifetime event. Graduation commemorates years of hard work, personal growth, and contributions to our Eugene community. Many of us will be the first in our families to graduate. From B.A. to Ph.D. degrees, there are thousands of students that would lose a moment they can never get back. Although the current situation leaves us with many unknowns about the future, we can mitigate difficulties around graduation plans by setting a later date.
It is our hope that officials at the University of Oregon listen to the Class of 2020 and help us make this momentous day happen, even if it has to be different than we imagined.
Students/Family/Staff: Please support the Class of 2020 by signing and sharing this petition! Stay safe!
