The Issue

We call for the UoN Students Union to provide a statement regarding the ongoing situation in Palestine, Jerusalem. On the 26th of April 2021 Israel’s right wing extremist fuelled by supremacy and anti-Palestinian hate took to streets shouting “death to Arabs” with protection of Israeli police. Following from this has been attacks in Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa mosque(7/05/21) and Sheikh Jarrah evictions (09/05/21). By Israeli Air Raids, 24 Palestinians have been murdered including children. The ongoing occupation, apartheid with state sanctioned violence requires attention. University of Nottingham students call for:

- UoN SU to make an open statement on the eviction, persecution, killing and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians (Christian and Muslims) as recognised by the UN and International Humanitarian law. UN, Human Rights Watch, and B’Tselem who have spoken up against the apartheid and forced evictions of families in occupied Palestine. Evictions are unanimously recognised to be illegal under international law as East Jerusalem remains part of the occupied Palestinian territory which means the occupation force holds no right to confiscate private property. These actions have been condemned by the UN’s Human Rights Office who has called on Israel to stop evictions immediately.
- Recognition of the sanctity of place of worship and these to be respected and protected (regardless of ethnicity, religion). The attack on Al-Aqsa is presented to show global audience as ‘religious conflict’ yet intentionally obfuscate the theft and evicting of human beings in Sheikh Jarrah. This deflection should be recognised.
- UoN SU to provide assurances and security for Palestinian students who continue to be impacted and cause mental distress, impacting on mental health of these individuals as well on students who share concerns of ongoing apartheid in Palestine. The UoN has a large Muslim and Christian base as well as campus in Malaysia who are horrified by the attacks of religious places of worship for Christian Palestinians who attempted to access the Sepulchre during Easter/attacks on the Palm Sunday processions as well as restrictions for Christians wanting to visit Bethlehem by IDF soldiers.
- We call for the SU to stop the promotion of events and stalls that condone the IDF’s actions when they act in a manner that’s starkly misaligned to the university’s morals. The SU has agreed for these events to occur in the past, in which the actions of the IDF were justified, and the acutely asymmetrical nature of the conflict was neglected. This included stalls that took place in thePortland building (2020).
- Just as the University were outraged at the knee of US police on George Floyd’s neck (leading to mass public outcry) so to it should be outraged of viral images Khairi Hanoon and recent viral images which havehad the knee of IDF soldier on their neck. We would expect the SU to provide a swift response on the ongoing murder, persecution and apartheid of Palestinians. We require the UoN SU to take a stance in solidarity against these crimes against human rights, to condemn the brutalisation of Palestinian protestors, as well as recognise the cause for their redress.
The UoN students have a right to speak out about the gravity of what is occurring in worship in Palestine right now.  SU needs to support issues of justice and stand up against oppression related to Palestinian students.
