Nikole Hannah-Jones, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer, journalist, and educator was denied a tenured position at the University of North Carolina by the Board of Trustees. Which was denied against the journalism department’s recommendation. This highly unusual move reeks of misogynoir, racism and is fraught with white supremacist ideology. Ms. Hannah-Jones was wooed by the university of North Carolina for her exceptional talents, and although she was unanimously supported by her peers and nominated for tenure, the board of trustees decided to forgo expert recommendations and deny her tenure. They then retreated into secrecy and telling lies instead of owning up to their nefarious and racist actions.

We demand that Nikole Hannah-Jones gets tenure instead of the less than optimal five-year contract they insteadoffered her. Her work, especially that on The Times Magazine’s 1619 Project is critical learning for this nation, and should not be denied simply because of racist ideology. Nearly 40 faculty members from the journalism school signed an online petition calling for the decision to be reversed, and we do too.
