Chi Zhang started this petition to University of Nebraska - Lincoln Ronnie Green and

Up till today(3/9), there are three confirmed COVID-19 cases in Douglas county, Nebraska. The one confirmed case, a 36-year-old woman, attended a special olympics event on 2/29 at the Fremont Family YMCA, 810 N. Lincoln Avenue. where approximately 500 other people were present. A few UNL students and employees had contact with the woman during the event.

Although there are no known confirmed cases in Lancaster county right now, we cannot neglect the fact that the symptoms can appear in as long as 14 days after the exposure.  The unaware, exposed individuals whose symptoms have not yet appear could be among us, carrying and spreading the virus on campus in classes and in areas such as libraries. Universities like Stanford and UW has already suspended their classes.

In the email that the Chancellor has sent to the UNL community today(3/9), he stated that "Medical officials report that, in general, young people are not seriously impacted by this disease". But my friends of the UNL community, the WHO has estimated that the mortality rate of this virus is 3.4%. For your reference, the mortality rate for the seasonal flu is 0.1%.

**Here, I sincerely hope UNL administration could decide to suspend in-person classes and instead DELIVER LECTURES ONLINE. Please stop sending hate messages claiming that this petition prevents you from graduating and ruins all your future plans. **

Please help your UNL friend out by signing this petition.

Many thanks!

Update @11:14pm, 3/9:

Looking at all the comments about my petition on facebook, I am very surprised at how uninformed people are about this virus.

Many people think that quarantine is unnecessary unless symptoms start to show. Please be aware that the incubation period can last for days before you start to realize and take action.

A lot of people regard COVID-19 as a mild virus that is nothing more serious than flu because quantitatively flu kills much more people than COVID-19 so far. Please compare the two diseases qualitatively rather than quantitatively. The CDC estimates that up to 42.9 million people got sick during the 2018-2019 flu season, 647,000 people were hospitalized and 61,200 died. While COVID-19 has only 700+ confirmed cases across the nation yet 26 have already died from it. Suppose that just like the flu, COVID-19 infected 42.9 million people, the deaths would be 42.9million*3.4%=1.46million (way more than 61,200 for the flu!!).
