University of Miami: Don’t Discriminate Against Trans Students!

The Issue

The first time I set foot on campus at the University of Miami, I felt like I belonged.

I remember as a freshman being so excited to be headed off to college. Living in the dorms, meeting new people, and feeling like I had just been welcomed into an incredible new, diverse family.

At the University of Miami, diversity isn’t just something we value; it’s the very fabric of what it means to be a Miami Hurricane.

So I was horrified when I learned that the University of Miami’s policies segregated and isolated transgender students, even preventing them from living in entire buildings – simply because they were trans.

Now as an alum, I've watched as trans issues finally get the national attention they deserve, but UM is refusing to clarify what its current policies are toward trans students in campus restrooms and housing.

That’s why I hope you’ll join me in calling on University of Miami president Dr. Julio Frenk, general counsel Aileen Ugalde, executive director of housing and residential life James Smart, and Title IX coordinator Roy Hinds:

Clarify the University of Miami’s policies toward transgender students, faculty, and staff. And state unequivocally that transgender students at UM will be treated in accordance with their gender identity in all aspects of the university’s programs and policies – including living in and using single-gender housing and restroom facilities.
