University of Memphis Spring 2020 Classes should switch to Pass/Fail Credit

The Issue

As you know, the University of Memphis is transitioning to remote and virtual instruction for the remainder of the spring semester. Naturally, there will be difficulties in this process.

While the University of Memphis has done a commendable job in keeping resources open for students, the nature of the pandemic may not allow students who are close to at-risk individuals to make use of these resources. These same students may not have access to computers or workspaces in their homes, making it impossible for them to succeed in virtual learning.

Virtual Learning presents difficulties for faculty, too. With virtual classes, faculty can lose valuable demonstrations and face-to-face interaction necessary for understanding. With Pass/Fail credits, the focus can be taken off of letter grades and placed completely on overcoming the challenges associated with virtual learning.

In the uncertainty of this pandemic, one thing is certain: student learning and growth is of the utmost importance. Student Grades should NOT suffer due to circumstances out of anyone's control.
