We are asking the University of Manchester's campus shop to stop stocking Sabra Hummus; a brand of hummus manufactured in the occupied West Bank that is complicit in human rights violations in occupied Palestine. The University's decision to stock Sabra in their shops actively endorses Israel's illegal occupation and human rights violations.
Sabra Hummus is a US based company owned jointly by PepsiCo and Strauss Group. Strauss is an Israeli multinational corporation which had claimed in English on their website that the company invests in and financially supports the Golani Brigade of the Israeli armed forces. One week after the announcement of the Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions campaign, the Strauss Group removed the statement in English, but has left the statement in Hebrew. Strauss had claimed on their website that they aid the Golani Brigade “with an ongoing variety of food products for their training or missions, and provide personal care packages for each soldier that completes the path”, as well as funding the unit for “welfare, cultural and educational activities, such as pocket money for underprivileged soldiers, sports and recreational equipment, care packages, and books and games for the soldiers’ club.” The Brigade has carried out a myriad of human rights violations against Palestinians in Hebron, including arbitrary murders, assaults, incarcerations, evictions, and arrests of children. It played key roles in the Israeli army’s assault on the Gaza Strip in 2008-09 during “Operation Cast Lead”. Widespread human rights abuses and possible war crimes were committed by the Israeli army during the assault. The Brigade’s existences as an occupying force violates international law: Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, the construction of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and its 1967 annexation of East Jerusalem are all illegal according to the United Nations. In 2005, Palestinian civil society initiated a global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel until it complies with international law. The Palestinian BDS National Committee now runs the international campaign, which functions as one of many efforts intended to achieve Palestinian self-determination. By financially supporting Sabra Hummus, and Strauss Group, one is financially supporting the maintenance of Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine, under International Law.
Thus, the following three points summarise the statement of the removal of Sabra products, including hummus, from the University of Manchester campus:
1. A purchase is an endorsement of the company’s politics.
2. The University of Manchester should not financially support human rights violators like the Golani Brigade.
3. “The Shop”, and other food retailers on campus should not sell Sabra hummus.
