“Starting with the fall semester, an Honors fee will be applied to student accounts for UofL Honors Students. The $50 fee will apply to fall and spring semesters, and funds generated will be used to directly benefit students, with student representatives on a committee guiding fee usage.”

We believe, as students, that the fee should be removed, as we currently have resources via the Honors Student Council and other initiatives to generate funds which directly benefit students. Seeing that the fee will seemingly be collected and spending will be determined by a committee in the future, there is ambiguity about what the funds will directly contribute to. It should also be mentioned that little to no choice or consideration was given to the Honors Student Community at large on the decision to implement the fee. 

Additionally, we find that the mandatory fee may discourage financially disadvantaged students (regardless of exemption for Pell Grant students) from applying to the University Honors Program and merit-based scholarships. Because of this, the longevity of diversity, inclusion, and prestige of the Honors Program may fade away over the course of a few or several academic terms.
