ULL STUDENTS FOR A UNIVERSAL PASS SYSTEM

ULL STUDENTS FOR A UNIVERSAL PASS SYSTEM
The Issue
Most students at The University of Louisiana at Lafayette have either commuted or moved distances to attend this University in hopes to seek higher education. . Oftentimes in life we are faced with obstacles that alter our plans. Currently, the nation is battling The Corona Virus Pandemic, and we as a people are making decisions right now to secure our safety. Various Students of UL have returned home to their families The students that decided to make the commitments to pay the money to come out and learn on campus likely did so knowing themselves and their specific learning styles. Some are aware that they respond better to classroom settings from the professor and it is the style we have been CHOOSING since we signed up for our classes. Unfortunately, that is no longer an option; We are now being forced to quickly adapt to learning styles that we are unaccustomed to, and it can prove to be more detrimental to us as a student than beneficial. Online classes vary and are administered at the professor’s discretion, which may create a disconnect in learning for those who have opted to partake in face to face lectures rather than remote ones. accustom yourself to something like this so late in the semester. There are multiple distractions when you remove the controlled environment of college,COVID-19 is shaking more than just the nation, but the globe, I feel like the magnitude of the situation alone should have this situation addressed much differently than it is. It is deeper than a matter of strength or willpower on the student with the current pandemic; Subjecting students to a form of education they didn't select from the beginning is unfair. The money we put down for the in class learning experiences is gone but we get a much smaller return.. The idea of forcing us to participate in remote courses is for most students therefore I strongly encourage the university to weigh another option. Each signature on this petition affirms the idea that the best option for us students would be for The University of Louisiana at Lafayette to operate under a universal pass grading system, meaning since the equal opportunity each student originally had at the start of the term is gone we are still given the chance to learn the course material, but without the added stress of possibly having to withdraw, or fail, losing the money spent on the courses in the first place and seeing how the students were still on track this far it can be assumed they were on track for completion and now the teacher should be able to gauge whether they would pass or fail and could administer the proper standing. On transcripts, students will see a P for pass, with an explanation of the trying times they were under, therefore equal credit will be given. This model is based on the UP system Yale University students proposed to their administration. Ragin Cajun family I hope you stand with me in hope for the success of all our students.
