On the weekend of November 22nd, a UIC student, a young woman, was brutally murdered and sexually assaulted in a UIC parking garage. The offender is a man who has no affiliation with the university.

This young woman entered the garage at 1:30 in the morning. While it is unclear whether or not the student was a housed on campus, the majority of students at UIC commute and use this particular garage.

Students are carrying out their responsibility to study and collaborate with peers to succeed at UIC. It is the university’s responsibility to ensure every property owned is safe and secure.

As a former UIC student, this is certainly not the first instance I’ve heard of violence, specifically against women, on campus or within University Village.

Safety is not a luxury, and we call on UIC to provide this to all students within all spaces granted by the institution.
