Giving UHCL students credit for spring semester and passing them
The Issue
Although, it may not pass completely none the less if you sign it will cause a deep conversation to be started but this is what we propose. Due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, UHCL has done its part in encouraging social distancing and sanitation by moving all classes online. While now this seems like a good solution, we believe that to maximize benefits and satisfaction, the best solution would be to implement a pass/fail grading option to accommodate students. Achieving this would have a widespread positive effect on students, since UHCL students’ average age is higher than a traditional college and a majority student are part-time student. As well as everyone dealing with their personal situations at home, they are prioritizing taking care of children, elderly parents, or not being able to leave or have funds due to unemployment. We also have to take into consideration that many classes here are not structured to be taken online and rely on group work, in-person interactions and demonstrations. By transitioning to online class, students may not properly absorb all information needed to excel in that particular class and future classes relating to it.Furthermore, we believe that it would be unfair to students if classes were simply canceled and the students weren't given any credit, because the students have already invested their time, effort, and money into these classes. Cancellation of class without credit may cause delays and set back in students’ academic career. As they have to attend school for an additional semester, this would force students to pay for another semester worth of tuition, pilling on student loan with money that most of us do not have. Additionally, while the teaching staff are doing great work to accommodate student, however, a number of them are unfamiliar with running an online course. This disruption could affect the teaching and learning of a subject negatively, causing students who would normally excel in a subject to possibly struggle or fail the course. Finally, we feel that this would allow all students and staff to fully focus on taking proper precautions against COVID-19 so that in the fall we may resume the commitments we made to UHCL and our own educations. Due to the concerns of our fellow student body we feel this is necessary just like our sister school UHD. Note that nothing is concrete.
