University of Edinburgh Strike Compensation (2021/2022)
The Issue
We, the undersigned students of the University of Edinburgh,
Demand compensation of 12% of our Tuition Fees for every paying student who loses contact time with teaching staff due to the previous strike from 1st December to 3rd December 2021, and the upcoming strike action from 14th February to 22nd February, 28th February to 2nd March 2022.
We, the students of the University of Edinburgh, feel that it is unfair that we will lose 13 days of our education without any compensation. The unprecedented magnitude of the two strikes (altogether 13 working days, 12% of teaching time in an academic year, 22 weeks x 5 days = 110 days) is unjustifiable and will be extremely damaging to all students.
Mathematically, this equates to
- UK Student Fees: (12% of £9000) = Approximately: £1080
- Overseas Student Fees: (12% of £16000 - 25000) = Approximately : £1920 to £3000
If the University is unable to reimburse us for the service we are paying for, something needs to be done in order to alleviate the consequences of the strike.
This is not to suggest that we, as students at UoE, are not in full support of the strike and we, of course, stand in solidarity with our tutors and lecturers alike. However, this support does not overshadow the serious disruptions caused to our studies.
