The Issue
To the University of California System,
Please help your International Students.
Students have to leave the US if attending online only classes in the fall; ICE's decision to deport international college students affects thousands.
Please help our voices be heard with ICE's decision that can negatively affect hundreds of thousands of lives. Sign today to help international students.
From NAAIS: ICE just announced that F1 and M1 students enrolled in full online-only courses at American universities will have to LEAVE THE COUNTRY or transfer to schools with in person classes. Additionally, the US Department of State will NOT ISSUE VISAS to students enrolled in schools and/or programs that are FULLY ONLINE for the fall semester nor will the US Customs and Border Protection permit these students to enter the United States. F1 students attending schools operating under normal in person classes may take a maximum of one class of three credit hours online. Based on ICE's news release alternative options available to students include departing the country and transferring to a new school w/ in person classes among others.
SO WHY SHOULD YOU CARE AND SIGN? (Words from @idontthinksokaren on Instagram)
Students with universities that does NOT offer in person classes WILL BE DEPORTED. Students who have taken out loans from their home country or the US will most likely not be refunded and thus stuck with a loan they don't need or can't use. Students who have already signed a lease for the coming semester are stuck with it. Students who would enter their last academic year aren't going to graduate as planned that may cause financial distress. Students whose visas expire after this academic year may not be able to renew their visa. In this case these students won't be able to finish their studies and graduate.
Since ICE made their announcement only today, most international students won't have the chance to transfer to another university. Students who are currently in the US are forced to RISK their health and safety while traveling during this global pandemic.
Lastly, the US hosts over 1 MILLION International Students per year. Deporting EVEN HALF of these students will cause serious risk of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
DEPORTING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IS ALSO PART OF THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION'S ONGOING ATTEMPT TO RESTRICT LEGAL IMMIGRATION TO THE UNITED STATES. HELP US AND SIGN AGAINST THIS. ALL STUDENTS DESERVE BETTER.
