Rian Pitts-Lopez started this petition to University of California Santa Barbara

Thanksgiving is a time of year that should be spent with friends, family, and loved ones. It is not a time for worry and stress from the partial school week that is currently in place. The University of California Santa Barbara should give all students, faculty, and staff the week of Thanksgiving off because all Gauchos deserve to be able to spend the week with family and loved ones without being constricted to only two days off.

By making Thanksgiving week a partial school week it leaves students, faculty, and their families conflicted about what to do. What ends up happening is that students will miss class because they have flights or trains to catch to be at their home by Thanksgiving day. Thus leaving students to be behind in class and ultimately leaves teachers to respond to emails about what their students missed in class. For some students the place they call home is not anywhere near their school, even leaving some students to not be able to go home for the holiday. Furthermore some families cannot afford the hundreds of dollars it would cost to bring their child home for only four days. On top of the cost traveling the day or night before Thanksgiving is hectic and sometimes unreliable, it would be devastating knowing that you missed your flight back home because you did not want to miss a lecture on Wednesday.

Students are not the only ones who miss out on moments with their family. Teachers and staff also miss out on memories with their loved ones. Some teachers and staff have young children and even teenage children who have the whole week off, which then forces them to either bring them into class or having to search for other care for their child while they work.

If the University of California Santa Barbara would start the first week of class on a Monday, instead of a Thursday those days would make up for the class time lost the week of Thanksgiving. That Monday through Wednesday, before class starts, is a waste of valuable time. There are some events hosted by different organizations and buildings, however there is no reason that those few events cannot be held the week before. Meaning move-in weekend would be two weekends prior to when school started. Giving students time to settle in and still participate in any activities They wanted to before school started.

If you feel as strongly as I do, please sign this petition in hopes that the University of California Santa Barbara will consider changing the academic calendar to reunite Gauchos with their families during a time of thanks. Thank you.
