Arianna Tariqi started this petition to University of California Merced

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has shown to be an aggressive virus infecting populations around the world. Specifically here in the Central Valley, there have been confirmed cases near UC Merced; we also have students from places with known cases of the virus. With UC Merced being located in the center of California, we are located within 135 miles to Stanford University, who has decided to suspend in-person instruction for the well-being of their faculty, staff, and students. We are approximately 128 miles from UC Berkeley who made the same proactive decision. We as a student body would like to focus on prevention rather than taking a retroactive approach to the situation. There are various commuting students living with their grandparents, sisters, and brothers who are at a greater risk for the detrimental effects of the COVID-19. We are petitioning for little to no in-person interaction through the facilitation of classes online via Catcourses and Zoom. We are asking for immediate change, and do not want to wait for the spread of this highly contagious disease to reach our fellow classmates and members of the Merced/UC Merced community.

Respectfully,

Students of the University of California, Merced
