I believe that adopting a cat for the University of Birmingham campus will be beneficial in four ways:

1. Animal Welfare: cats are the most rescued animal in the UK. Adopting a cat from a local branch of Cats Protection will help raise awareness of animal welfare issues in the West Midlands region and beyond.

2. Student Mental Health: therapy dogs coming onto campuses during assessment periods are not uncommon and recent research demonstrates the benefits of pets on student mental health and a stronger sense of community.

3. Environmentally Friendly Campus: biodiversity* on campus is a meaningful goal in the ongoing battle with climate change. Our campus already made progress in becoming a hedgehog friendly campus! The presence of a cat on campus will remind everyone to take care of their environment and of other less visible and overlooked living organisms on campus.

4. Branding: it is no secret that brand mascots boost engagement and interest; take our beloved Old Joe for example! Other universities in the UK actively publicise their campus cats.

*biodiversity: introduction of domesticated cats into an ecosystem can have negative consequences on it. Whilst a single cat shouldn't threaten our campus ecosystem, all the necessary steps to minimise that risk will be discussed and implemented. Feeding the car regularly enough so that it doesn't need to hunt as often for example.
