Basketball court in Wesbrook Village

Basketball court in Wesbrook Village
The presence of a proper basketball court would finally perfect the increasing Wesbrook community. This past summer, many people have started to go back outside and socialize through outdoor sports and activities, meaning that many would have been in search for a place to play basketball. A basketball net; lacking a headboard or any court lines, was put up by a local person on the side of Collings Field at Nobel Park attached to a fence pole standing a few feet lower than the average hoop height. This “homemade” basketball hoop swiftly became overtaken by a never ending sea of families and students. The consistent crowd at the hoop sparked the question as to why Wesbrook was lacking a proper one. People were overheard discussing that they needed an official court and that there were so many places to put it, this individual shares their opinion on the situation, "I want a basketball hoop at Wesbrook because I like to play basketball with my friends. We have never had one around here and it would be nice to have" (Uhill Secondary student).
In continuation, besides the overwhelming number of people that support and plead for the addition of a basketball court, how will this project ultimately prove beneficial to the Wesbrook community? Throughout Covid-19 the ability to socialize was limited, causing many to forget the happiness created from human connections and interactions, this basketball court could be the pathway to rebuilding connections between Wesbrook students and families. Apart from that, many people are looking for way to exercise while having fun, and this could be a great solution to that, allowing kids, teens, and adults to have access to an amazing physical activity. Finally, this basketball court would mean a lot to all the local basketball players that are unable to practice their skills indoors due to current state of the pandemic. In conclusion, the placement of a basketball court in Wesbrook would have an overall positive impact on the community by bringing people together through shared interests during and after these difficult times.
