Help Enforce Better Grading Policies at University High School

Hi, my name is Amrut Ayyala. I'm a sophomore in the class of 2019 at University High School, and ever since I was a kid, it's been a dream to make my mother happy when I grow up. To do that I need to go to a good college, get good grades, extracurriculars, etcetera etcetera. As a sophomore at my High School, I began to take more strides to improve my ability as a student, and to set myself up for a better future. I tried to the best of my ability to make myself the best I could be, on track to get a 4.0 weighted by the end of the second semester.

But sometimes some things don't fall into our control, things that we can't exactly have a handle over.

Students across the University High School face a problem. On our campus, we have multitudes of teachers that fall behind in grading, and we find ourselves at the end of the semester with an outstanding amount of assignments still entirely left out of the gradebook, and our grades suffer for it. We typically can plan for our classes, strategize and try to bring them up, but the fact that we don't have our gradebooks always updated brings about a shocking reality.

As it stands, I currently have 14 assignments completely ungraded. It's one thing for a student to be dealt a bad hand of cards because at least they know what they're up against. They can begin to plan and gauge themselves before it's too late.

But the scary part is that we just don't know.

We don't know how to stack ourselves up or if we can even get ahead because we haven't been given that option.

We as a student body understand that you can't always change things and that not much can be helped here, but please, hold teachers accountable. It scares me because I don't know if I'm going to be able to keep my 4.0 this semester.

Here's what I propose: According to a teacher that I have, the department of each field can monitor teachers' grade books, this device being used to track new teachers and make sure they adhere to UHS policy: putting assignments where they should be and such. I believe this ability can be used to monitor teachers, and check in every quarter or so to make sure the teacher is updating Aeries and giving students capacity to check their grades. I also propose a periodical check-in with teachers, just asking them where they are with progression through units, so that the school can get a better idea for how updated the Aeries grade book should be updated.

University High School is a perfect place. I love this school, the students that go here, and every single class I take. It's a great place, but I want to make it better. I want our students to perform the best they can, and it's impossible for students to make themselves and seeking the help they need without knowing where they stand first.

So please UHS administration, help us.
