Force DePaul President Dennis H. Holtschneider To Resign From His Position
The Issue
On Tuesday, May 24, 2016, conservative activist Milo Yiannopoulos hosted an event at DePaul University. Milo is known to have extremely controversial views that spark protest. Because of this, Milo requested security. At the last minute, DePaul charged Milo quite a bit of extra money for this request. None the less, Secretary Lindsey Arenburg assured Milo that the security guards who be ready to act if anything went south during the event. This doesn't seem to have been the case. During the event, a minister by the name of Edward Ward and an unidentified female African American protestor stormed the stage. Ward did everything in his power to assure Milo wouldn't be allowed to express his first amendment rights, even going as far as to blow a whistle whenever Milo tried to speak. The African American female later snatched the microphone out of the other moderator's hand and even hit Milo. Despite this, security did nothing. The event was eventually shut down thanks to bigotry. The cameraman who was given permission to film was arrested. And what of the woman who swung at Milo? Completely let off the hook. New information reveals that Lindsey Arenburg who assured Milo that the guards were ready to act at any sign of disruption, lied to Milo and told the guards not to act. But the most despicable part of all this is how DePaul President Dennis H. Holtschneider responded as he disgracefully compared the cowardly disruptors to soldiers who gave their lives on D-Day. Hearing a reverend who has served as the president of a highly respected university for over ten years say someone like this is a bit disheartening, and it seems to be damaging the reputation of DePaul as online ratings and reviews for the school are becoming more and more negative. I've talked to many students of DePaul who say they are ashamed to attend the university with the recent events that have occurred. I would like to see DePaul continue to thrive, and I believe the best way to approach the problem is to find better leadership. I think the first step in achieving this is to find a better leadership. For that to be possible, I believe the first step in achieving this goal is to force the resignation of President Holtschneider. I believe by doing so, DePaul can re-establish itself as a prestigious university.
