The original petition was not accepted by the University Council and they decided to support continued negotiation for development. As far as I am aware, there has been only limited consultation for this development plan and no consultation with traditional owners in this area.
Despite the decision by the University Council to continue support for the development, I have decided to keep this petition open. Please continue to note your opposition to the development - if we gain substantial interest, we will then be able to present our petition to the major local players; the State Government, CQUniversity and the Rockhampton Regional Council. You may also wish to contact any of these directly to note your concerns. Any support opposing this project is welcome.

Original petition follows:
An urban development area was proposed for the Rockhampton campus of CQUniversity in late 2011. This campus is situated on land set aside for educational uses after substantial lobbying by the local community in the 1960s. The proposed plan effectively reduces the land originally set aside for educational uses to approximately 20% of the original land provided. The Qld Minister for Economic Development Queensland has now stated that the proposal will proceed pending final submissions by 'affected owners'. Their submission report negated the bulk of concerns raised by submitters (8 statements in support; 114 of concern) during the community consultation process and there appear to be no amendments to the original land use plan published.
Details of the submitted development plan and the submission report can be read at http://www.dsdip.qld.gov.au/infrastructure-and-planning/cqu-rockhampton.html. A number of submissions opposing the plan were submitted by staff and students; and we believe there is wide opposition to the proposed development on the site. This petition has been prepared to allow staff, current and past students of the university and members of the wider affected community to petition the University Council to oppose the development.
We see this as critical for the future growth of the university in Rockhampton. The university is currently in a growth stage and restriction of expansion would severely hamper this.
The community of Rockhampton has a close attachment to 'its' university and should also be allowed to have input into this decision. All we ask is that you read the necessary documents and consider noting your opposition to the plan by petitioning the University Council to intervene.
