With the current COVID-19 pandemic, we all entrusted in our university to uphold to their standards, in which they allowed us to believe that they will plan to their best ability for the upcoming semester. As a sophomore student at the University of Texas at San Antonio, I am appalled out how my school is handling the Fall 2020 plans. After doing more and more research, and with cases rising, especially in San Antonio, with 12,000 total cases, what do they think will happen by having students return?

Their unpreparedness for their plans is prevalent that we are not ready to return. With their decision to officially have students take their in-person-classes, online after Thanksgiving break, our tuition rate has remained the same. We, as students, should not have to worry on how we will pay for a semester, that involves a remote-style learning. After hearing news today, that the university has unfortunately eliminated 243 positions, it is questionable as to why these budget cuts were made and how will this affect the university as a whole. If UTSA  is charging us full tuition, there should have been no excuse to be able to afford to keep them employed.

Our university tuition and fees remain the same. We, not only deserve answers, but also deserve change. After researching the budget and calculating many numbers, by reviewing The UTSA Operating Budget- Fiscal Year ending August 31, 2020, I have questions as to why the UTSAPD has a budget of over $5 million, yet student services, AS A WHOLE, was only $4 million. I understand that the university wanted to implement safety on campus, however, safety has been thrown out the window in your plans for the upcoming semester.

In addition to the absurd payments and fees that they are charging students, the handling of the environment is highly concerning. Not promising students a clean environment by blatantly voicing that they will be unable to sanitize classrooms after each use is just the boiling point. Charging full tuition for an unsafe environment is despicable.

  • Refer to Texas Education Code Sec. 54.0513, letter (a): a)
In addition to amounts that a governing board of an institution of higher education is authorized to charge as tuition under the other provisions of this chapter, the governing board, under the terms the governing board considers appropriate, may charge any student an amount designated as tuition that the governing board considers necessary for the effective operation of the institution.

Due to the university discontinuing in-person learning, after the Thanksgiving break, the university has planned on providing remaining resources available after the Thanksgiving break. One thing is to have resources remain available, another is to have them accessible. The university clearly knows that majority of campus will be inaccessible after Thanksgiving to thousands of students, therefore they should cut fees, only according to which they truly consider is necessary to have an effective operation for the institution.

One thing I might add is the direct correlation of COVID-19 patient demographics and the demographics of the student population at The University of Texas at San Antonio. The student body is majority of Hispanic students, with about 53% of the entire population. That's more than half!  The parts of the country hit hardest so far by COVID-19 have larger Black and Hispanic/Latino populations. With the lack of commitment to ensure safety on campus, they are still demanding full tuition.

Why are we paying thousands of dollars to risk our lives?
