Justice For Michael Chambers: Serving an Illegal Sentence of 25 Years
The Issue
I am the wife of Michael Chambers who is currently an inmate in the state of Delaware prison system. He has received an illegal sentence per statute 4204k. While Michael was reporting to probation and parole for his routine visit this particular day. A warrant was signed, issued and served at an address without his name on it and where he did not reside. After the search, Michael was charged with possession of a gun and drugs, possession with the intent to deliver, maintaining a dwelling and many other charges. His fingerprints were never on the gun. Nothing in this residence belonged to Michael. I literally mean nothing. And none of the people named on the warrant were ever indicted. Not to mention, the Delaware DOJ does not want to give him credit served from another state. There are no rehabilitation programs or technical shops offered to the inmates that will allow them to enhance any skills that they may have prior to coming into the facility nor to enroll in to gain new skills. With that being said, are they coming to receive due services that is allowed to them to reform and slowly prosper into society as mentally balanced individuals that can function after receiving proper therapies or are you just bringing them in to complete the application and fill in the occupation as "Inmate" so that DOJ can keep them for 25+ years; especially if they are black men from the inner city. Not to mention if they don't have any money for an attorney and no one to support them during the criminal case. That's three strikes already against them. And the saga continues. I am coming here today begging for relief of my husband. He has been down for 17 1/2 years. He is remorseful for his mistakes and begs God for forgiveness constantly. He knows and understand his wrong doings and accepts responsibility for his. He has taken all the classes that were required of him and he also taken some that were not. Because he wants to improve his social and critical thinking skills. He does not want to be a product of his environment. He knows now, that he must think before reacting. He wants to make a change in this country with young black men. And he wants to be a part of that change. Please reach out to the named officials and let them know that this law is illegal and that it needs to be address it. We need to get our black men home so that they can enjoy their families and help better their communities. Mike has grandchildren now that he wants to make memories with. He's ready to spend time with his mother and children. He deserves a SECOND CHANCE. He has never been given one. It's way overdue. He deserves it. And he has so much to offer his community and family upon his release. He is not that 20 something year boy that went in 17 1/2 years ago. He has a very supportive family out here waiting for him. Please sign your signature on this petition because we need to get my husband, their father, ya'll brother home. It is his time for a second chance. Justice for MICHAEL CHAMBERS,do to a unjust sentencing practice,Mr. Chambers was not credited to 16 years of incarceration in another State due Delaware not having a concurrent sentencing Law on the books for 40 years, now as of 2019 Delaware now has a concurrent Law on the books but they being the Legislatures only made applicable to those sentenced after 2019,this is not just for you have people gravely affected by the previous law that gave out disproportionate sentences for crimes that were not violent in nature but because the Statute reads that any person once convicted as a violent Felon this follows him for any charge that he or she picks up afterwards. Mr.Chambers did not kill anyone nor,did he participate in a violent felony when given the charges Mr.Chambers is serving a 25/year sentence for. Please help us make House bill 5 retroactive so we can give people who deserve it a second chance at true reform.
