The Issue

A century ago, 14% of America’s farmers were Black. In the present, that figure has dropped to 1.7%. It’s time to reverse that trend.

Black farmers have been consistently discriminated against by the US Department of Agriculture over the course of more than a century. These acts include failing to equitably provide Black farmers with the number of loans given to White farmers, to failing to take action to prevent discrimination in the modern day.

The Justice for Black Farmers Act seeks to right these wrongs. Among the bill’s most important provisions is a commitment to setting aside 8 billion dollars for the purpose of buying land at fair market value and giving it to Black farmers.

In the past, America’s massive land grants failed to make their way into the hands of Black people, by and large. During the majority of America's growth periods, Black Americans were given leftovers, broken promises and even broken bodies. This bill aims to make Black people the focus of the US government's economic generosity, rather than the target of its ire.
