Lynden Post Office Mural Is Great and Needs to Remain As Is

The Issue

There’s a ridiculous petition on line recently started by a local couple in the town of Lynden, Washington, in support of defacing the historic New Deal era mural inside the Lynden Post Office, depicting the founding of Lynden, because they consider it offensive and sexually degrading and dehumanizing to women. If others disagree with them, they are labeled “uneducated” by the authors of their petition.

Rather than expending energy on something this frivolous, why not volunteer at a food bank, or perhaps help out at the humane society? There are so many worthwhile causes in our area. Jesus spoke of caring for the sick, the hungry, the orphans, the imprisoned, the homeless, the destitute. Never did he worry about something like this.

This mural dates from 1942 so that art would be available to everyone. It’s been viewed by thousands of people, and I’ll tell you this much: in over 70 years of this mural being at the Post Office, there still isn’t a pandemic of pornography in our town.

I encourage reasonable people everywhere to sign this petition to make a definitive statement that there is no reason to make an issue out of this historic mural, let alone deface it.

Thanks for your consideration.
