The Buffalo Nickel was one of the greatest American coins ever minted, with a Native American on the obverse and an American bison (sometimes called a "buffalo") on the reverse. The design was rugged and distinctly American, highlighting our indigenous heritage and the unique beauty of the American landscape.  

On May 9, 2016, the bison became the first national mammal of the United States.
