Tiny Fighter Bill - Extend FMLA benefits for families of babies in the NICU.

In the United States, mothers that work for eligible employers are provided 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected maternity leave through the Family Medical Leave Act. This time is to be used for recovery from delivery and bonding with the child. Unfortunately, this same coverage is applied to mothers of babies who spend their first weeks/months of life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

I, like many other mothers had to make a choice. I had to decide how I would use the short 12 weeks of job protection while my daughter was fighting for her life. Should it be spent with her as she lay in an incubator? Should it be saved for when she finally came home after 74 days?

This is a choice that no mother should ever have to make. Yet, we are forcing it upon so many women across the country. Mothers should be afforded the right to spend their days alongside their infant(s) fighting for their lives in the NICU. Mothers should be afforded the right to bond with their infant(s) when they come home. Most importantly, mothers should be afforded the right to not have to choose between the two.

There must be a change! Therefore, I am proposing legislation to amend the Family Medical Leave Act. This amendment would provide up to an additional 12 weeks of job protection for families of babies that spend longer than 7 days in the NICU.
