The Housing Choice (Section 8) Voucher program was created under the housing and community development act of 1974. This program grants eligible low income families that meet eligibility requirements Housing vouchers. As we all know rent, and affordable housing can be difficult to find especially in Los Angeles. This program services roughly 2,000,000 households a year but that’s not nearly enough. Some of these families can remain on the list to receive a housing voucher for years. We need faster relief, but that will require more funding.

Statistics show that our civilization is affected when it comes to affordable housing. When this happens, it creates a domino effect. Not only are lives impacted, but so are our neighborhoods, schools, and quality of life. While affordable housing has been argued to have become a crutch, it has been a source of hope, confidence, and a sense of peace for those within the community. Children are able to have a place they can call home, while all people can have a chance to get back on their feet.

 In addition, affordable housing can help alleviate the dangers that haunts our neighborhoods everyday. Without affordable housing, crimes will continue to escalate, mental health cases will climb exponentially, and our streets will be flooded with hopelessness and despair. But through greater funding, affordable housing can be the resource to better our tomorrow.
