On February 1st 2020, the first confirmed case of coronavirus in Massachusetts was announced and made public. The patient was an attendee of the University of Massachusetts Boston, and stepped foot on campus while infected. In addition, was partially diagnosed on campus (taken to testing for suspicion of coronavirus and was quarantined). Since the patient was on campus as he was infected, there is still a possibility of infecting other students/faculty/and staff on campus. Viruses are able to reproduce very quickly since they are single celled, and can transfer through the touch, saliva, or even the AIR. It is unsafe for students to return to school given the fast rate in which this virus is spreading. In addition, it can take up to 2-14 days for symptoms of this virus to appear, and up to 36 hours of testing for a confirmed case. It is NOT fair for students at University of Massachusetts Boston to be forced into school with a public health threat present. Many students are having to sacrifice their well beings in order to attend important classes and are unexcused. Which may lead to anxious feelings, ect. Students should NOT have to feel unsafe on campus. We are not blaming and do not want to attack the coronavirus patient in Massachusetts (we do understand that he did not want this to happen). We do not support the racism going around, stand by, and hope for a successful recovery for the patient.
