Lowering the Cost of EpiPens.

Lowering the Cost of EpiPens.

The Issue

Millions of Americans suffer from allergens that can cause anaphylactic reactions which is a life threatening allergic reaction that can cause airways to narrow constricting the victims' ability to breath. They can also experience complete shock, skin rash, swelling of the skin, nausea, and vomiting.

For those who have anaphylaxis reactions due to allergies, they're more than likely carrying a EpiPen on hand at all times because if not treated immediately, they could face very severe consequences like unconsciousness or death

Although the price of an Epinephrine Auto-Injector can range between $300-$700+ depending on insurance and sometimes provided coupons the actual device is between $8-$30 to manufacture. With that being said there should be no reason why this life saving device should have such a high mark up.

What needs to happen in order to lower the price of Epipens is opening the market for other alternative options not just the few companies out there. By allowing this there can be more generic over the counter options.

Reasons to not ask insurance companies for better coverage on Epipens would be because in the long run there would be not better deal. The manufactures could keep increasing the price therefor risking other benefits from the users' insurance company.

The average life of an Epipen is only 18 months if stored properly. People who have the chance of an anaphylaxis reaction purchase the device(s) and sometimes never use them. I believe there should be more research done to preserve the devices especially with the high price tag associated.

We can't choose our allergens so Big Pharma shouldn't choose our prices.
