I asked John Hazelette to inquire about the air ducts and when they were last cleaned and coils replaced as this could be adding to the mold, mildew, breathing quality issues at the school. This is the response I received. Still no word back on the 24-48 hour results for the air quality test done this last Friday.

Good afternoon Ms. Brittany Diaz-Chapman

I posed your question to our facilities team and I received the following response: “The rooftop units are package units that provide both gas heat, and air conditioning to each classroom, and other areas in the building. The units do not have traditional ductwork; they have concentric ductwork which is, a duct within a duct. The outside ductwork supplies air to the space, while the inside ductwork returns air back to the unit, where make up air is added, thru the air filter, then back thru the unit where it is re-conditioned.

Typically if there is a problem with an individual unit a work order is submitted, and the unit is repaired by a technician. The units are constructed in such a way that very little maintenance is required other than air filter changes. The building supervisor (at the school) is responsible for ordering, and replacing filters, at which time a visual inspection is done on the evaporator coil.
Every building supervisor keeps a filter log as to when the filters are being replaced. The building supervisor also cleans/vacuums registers as needed.

Normally the coils do not require cleaning unless the filters have been neglected (similar to a residential unit in the average home). It is not necessary to have the coils replaced. Although it is not normally necessary for our HVAC shop to conduct an inspection of all coils, I will have our HVAC shop supervisor create a special work order to check all filters, and evaporator coils.”

I hope this answers your questions.

Our HVAC shop staff went to Sherwood today and have provided the following report:

“Checked all 39 roof top gas pack coil conditions, filter conditions and heat exchanger conditions. Secured all loose exterior panels.

All coils were in good shape. Found filters replaced on all classrooms but need filters replaced for the auditorium (4) and cafeteria (3) units.

Found no heat exchangers bad. Found filter access doors need replaced for classrooms 12,21,26 auditorium (2) Cafeteria (1) awaiting quote and availability.

NOTE- There were no signs of varmints inside the units”
